Step 1: Safe Shutdown
Before anything else — operator safety. If the forklift stops unexpectedly:
- Lower the forks to the ground immediately.
- Apply the parking brake.
- Turn off the ignition.
- Place warning cones or barriers if the machine is blocking a lane.
- Keep the operator in the cab only if there is structural risk — otherwise evacuate away from the machine.
Step 2: Don't Attempt to Restart Repeatedly
This is the most common mistake. Repeatedly trying to start a machine with a fuel, electrical or hydraulic fault can cause secondary damage — flooding an engine, draining a battery, or forcing hydraulic fluid into unintended areas. If it doesn't start on the first attempt after a safe pause, stop and call for professional emergency forklift service.
Step 3: Quick Fault Triage (Non-Technical)
You don't need to diagnose the fault — just observe and note:
Any warning lights or fault codes?
Note them down or photograph the display.
Any smells?
Burning rubber = brake/tyre. Burning electronics = wiring. Fuel smell = LPG or diesel leak.
Any leaks visible under the machine?
Hydraulic fluid is amber. Coolant is green/yellow. Water is normal condensation.
Any sounds before it stopped?
Clicking on startup = battery. Grinding = gearbox or brakes. Banging = engine.
Was the forklift hot?
Check the temperature gauge — overheating causes an automatic shutdown on most modern machines.
Step 4: Call Emergency Forklift Service
When you call D'sfs Forklifts on 074 238 1260, a qualified technician answers directly — not a receptionist. Have the following ready:
- Forklift make, model and serial number
- Your exact location (site name, street or GPS pin)
- What the fault looks like (from your Step 3 triage)
- Whether the forklift is accessible to a service vehicle
Step 5: Secure the Machine Until We Arrive
If the breakdown has happened in a vulnerable location — close to a loading bay edge, on a slope, or blocking other equipment — ensure the parking brake is fully engaged and, if available, chock the rear wheels. Do not attempt to tow or push the forklift without knowing the fault type, as this can damage the drivetrain.
